*Lately*

this is what i've been up to:

hitting garage sales with my sis. i found these little doo dads. i think they're japanese buttons. i could be wrong, but i can't wait to scrapbook with them! they're so bright and cheery!

and another find...this precious retro phone. we don't currently have a land line, but it will sit in our kitchen and shine and be beautiful for now.

my brother-in-law and nephew got these for me from the market. a pleasant little Saturday morning surprise. one of the highlights of my day!

making silly faces with this guy. this is just one in a series. : )

having sister time. i seriously love it when we're all together!

laying in the grass and taking pictures of weeds.

trying to be artistic and taking trippy self-portraits.

adding to my collection of grandma-ish things (this pin is another garage sale find). i wore it today and it made me feel pretty. : )

And last, but certainly not least is - (drum roll please).... this beauty. Introducing the newest addition to our apartment. This little chair (you can use the word "grandma" again if you'd like). It's green and it's funky and it's gorgeous. $15 at a garage sale. It sits in the corner of our bedroom and I have to say, we've already gotten acquainted with each other. I can imagine I will spend many mornings cuddling up with her, coffee and book in hand. Chris, not understanding my vintage taste, hauled the heavy thing down our very long apartment building hallway, sat it down examining it and said, "You're lucky you're married to me." : ) Why, yes. Yes I am.

Have a good week!

*art picnic*

today i packed up my art supplies and had a creative picnic. it was so nice outside today i couldn't resist...and i find nature so inspiring. i sprawled out in the grass and doodled, painted, journaled, and read.

so thankful spring is finally here.

and i read this today...(it's by Frederich Buechner in his book "Telling the Truth: The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy and Fairy Tale."

"It is a world of magic and mystery, of deep darkness and flickering starlight. It is a world where terrible things happen and wonderful things too. It is a world where goodness is pitted against evil, love against hate, order against chaos, in a great struggle where often it is hard to be sure who belongs to which side because appearances are endlessly deceptive. Yet for all its confusion and wildness, it is a world where the battle goes ultimately to the good, who live happily ever after, and where in the long run everybody, good and evil alike, becomes known by his true name...That is the fairy tale of the Gospel, with of course, one crucial difference from all other fairy tales, which is that the claim made for it is true, that if not only happened once upon a time but has kept on happening ever since and is happening still."

Good reminder of how we are involved in something bigger than us. And I love to explore my imagination in that and draw out the pictures in my head and put them on paper ... letting art be an act of worship.

By the way, this guy is my new favorite. Listen to his coffeeshop love song and swoon with me. http://www.myspace.com/landonpiggmusic

Springtime in the City

Hello to all!

I have just returned from my wonderful adventure in New York City! It was amazing. It was definitely worth the 18 hour bus ride to get there. Strangely, the bus ride was actually enjoyable. We passed beautiful cliffs and mountains, went over bridges hanging above valleys and rivers, and even made friends with a trucker. Yup. It was quite a trip. I have to say, though, the best part of the entire thing was being able to have the time of my life with some of my best friends. They really made it fun (even though they just couldn't understand why I was SO obsessed with Fashion Avenue. They had it in their heads that it was just a street. Psh! More like the most crazy awesome fantastic stretch of concrete ever developed by man!)
Unfortunately, the camera that I used during the trip is probably older than dirt. I wasn't able to document some of the more exciting and beautiful portions of my trip, but I'll show you what I have. I made it a point to take pictures that would show the nitty-gritty of New York City. For example, I took this picture while riding on the bus. I immediately grabbed my less than functional camera when I heard my friends exclaim, "What the deuce?" or "Hot dang!" or the ever popular "Jeez-a-loo!!" etc, etc. I figured that whatever outfit could cause such a ruckus must be worth a picture.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not into bashing other people's choices of clothing. I love it when people wear what they want to. Isn't expressing one's individuality what fashion is all about? I just thought that this picture portrayed the some of the diversity that New York holds.
On the trip, we not only came across a wide range of different people, but many different tourist traps as well. One of which was this boat tour. We were told that we would be seeing the Statue of Liberty. We were all very excited about this, but we had no idea how much excruciating boredom we would have to sit through beforehand.
But we did eventually get to see Lady Liberty in all her glory.

What weekends are good for...

Taking silly self-portraits.

Celebrating this little guy's two years of life.

Drinking tea, taking walks, getting fresh air, reading...

Working on project stuff. I'm trying a new system for scrapbooking - trying to get caught up with old photos. I'm organizing pictures into envelopes with any other bits or ideas (i.e. quotes or clippings from magazines.) So far I like it; I'll let you know how it goes.

...and finally, making pages. This is one of five layouts I completed this weekend - yay! I love getting stuff done and slipping more pages in my scrapbooks. What did you do this weekend?

Erika's in New York City. I'm jealous! She'll be back later in the week to post about all that inspired her in the big city. Have a good week!

Hello and welcome...

to "art on the fridge." The little blog where we archive the cute things we're excited about making and the fun times we have as sisters, artists, and friends. We get together and make stuff. And while we think the stuff we make is pretty nifty, we think that the work of our Heavenly Father is the most breath-taking and wonder-filled and anything we could create is like a little kid's art on the fridge in comparison. We are Erika and Jamie.
Meet Erika. She loves fashion and likes to sew stuff.
What inspires her:
"travel magazines. big cities. summer. pretty much anything in creation. crazy people."
Her creative hero:
"Probably God...that sounds really corny, but - yeah, he created everything creative ever."
Current project:
Purse.

Musician she loves to listen to right now:
Glen Hansard.
Favorite junk food:
Oreos.
Creative dream:
"To become a big-time fashion designer."
Favorite fictional character:
"Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes. I wish I was seven."
Desired superhero quality:
Laser-beaming eyes. Mind powers.
The craziest things she's worn:
A banana suit.
Quirk:
"In my mind, letters and numbers have personalities and genders."

Meet Jamie. She loves paper and stickers and stuff.
What inspires her:
Rainbows, ambitious people, music, movies, color, spring.
Her creative hero:
"Probably Rebecca Sower - a scrapbooker, author, and designer. She's the one that made me so excited to scrapbook because she thinks outside of the box and creates with heart and meaning."
Current project:
A stash of cards.

Musician she can't stop listen to:
"My sister gave me an Emmy Lou Harris cd and I'm really enjoying it."
Creative dream:
"I have very lofty and big dreams...I want to write, create and then write a book about creating! And, I want to become a mom - I'm pretty sure that requires some creativity."
Favorite fictional character:
"I love Dori from Finding Nemo. She's hilarious."
Superhero quality:
"To fly. And to heal people from their hurt. Together they'd be a great combo."
The craziest thing she's worn:
"I've worn my bra on the outside of my shirt to make Chris laugh. But it wasn't in public, we just rode around in the car that way!"
Quirk:
"I always say 'whenever' in place of "when" and it's a grammatical disaster. : )"

Have a good week!
